MISSION VIEJO – KITCHEN, STAIRS, STUDY DESK & BATHROOM REMODEL

For the owners of this Mission Viejo home, they wanted a kitchen that felt spacious and inviting, not cluttered and oppressive. Their old kitchen, and many of the other rooms, didn’t meet these needs, so they contacted APlus for a complete home renovation. Our lead designer came up with a cool and airy new design for the kitchen, one based on a palette of white and gray, with a whisper of pale blue on the exposed walls. We kicked things off with the installation of coffee brown hardwood floors and the removal of the dropped ceiling sections, in favor of a level ceiling. We built the traditional custom cabinets in a U-shaped layout, with a crisp white finish and multi-layered crown moulding that extends throughout the room, even where cabinets are absent. Some of the upper cabinets are paneled with teardrop textured glass, allowing for the display of finer dishware, and even the owner’s cookbook collection. As is always the case with APlus cabinets, we put in a number of customizations: a pull-out trash drawer, vertical tray storage in the form out stationary shelves and pull-outs, fold-out corner doors, lazy suzans, spice-pulls, and roll-out tray shelving, as well as a pull-out tray for the printer. On the walls we installed a glossy gray tile backsplash with white grout, complementary to the light gray granite countertops with dark gray accents, which tie in with the deep black finish of the center island’s cabinetry and seating. An undermount double-bowl sink faces the newly replaced bay window, which provides a view of the leafy backyard. The sink’s faucet and soap dispensers are in a sleek black that matches the other contrasting accents of the kitchen.
In the living room, we refaced the fireplace with rustic red bricks and shabby-chic mortar, then surrounded it with built-in shelving. The thick mantle connects both sections of the cabinetry and shelving, creating a very polished look that is in harmony with the updated kitchen. Close by, we also built a workstation right into a recessed portion of the wall. This includes a desk, with the same granite surface seen in the kitchen, and upper cabinets separated by open shelving for books. The nearby bathroom was painted in a vibrant vermillion, and enhanced with a custom vanity and cabinetry with the same kitchen materials. In the home’s entryway, we gave the old stairway a dramatic update, with new balustrades and bold black railings and steps. APlus expertly performs renovations throughout the Orange County area.
