LAGUNA NIGUEL – KITCHEN REMODEL WITH CUSTOM WHITE CABINETS

The original kitchen of this Laguna Niguel home wasn’t all that bad. Its main problems were inefficiency and a boring style. In our renovation, we set out to make the room exceedingly more practical for the owner’s needs, and more visually appealing. The owner wanted something subdued and chic, a look of understated elegance that kept the atmosphere relaxed. Our lead designer came up with a classy traditional kitchen concept, in a muted color palette of white and warm, dusty gray. To execute this vision, we removed everything from the old kitchen and installed ashen wood plank flooring. Then, to let in more light and improve the home’s insulation, we did an upgrade with brand new windows and a large sliding glass door to the backyard. In moving on to restructuring the layout, we left an open doorway at the back to allow for easy serving in the dining room, which was also outfitted with new windows.
Our new plans for the kitchen entailed a curving G-shaped layout that opens up to the living room. We built custom white cabinets that followed this shape, with subtly recessed panels and simple moulding. Their classic look was enhanced by the addition of simple yet stylish black hardware. Some of the upper cabinet doors were accented with textured glass panel insets, and all of them were track lighting mounted on the undersides. As with all APlus custom cabinets, we built in numerous custom elements to increase the usefulness of all storage space available. These include vertical tray pull-outs, lazy suzans, a pull-out trash drawer, and a fold-out sponge drawer. At the open side of the kitchen, the edge of the countertop was lifted to create a raised breakfast bar, which features custom carved corbels. Upon the kitchen’s walls we installed a multi-toned backsplash of staggered rectangular stone tiles, whose texture is drawn attention to with the cabinet lighting. For our final touch in the kitchen, instead of leaving the space unused as it was before, we built an all new small corner pantry with custom shelving. In the living room, we refaced the fireplace with stone tiles in creamy neutral tones – oversized squares at the base, and narrow rectangles on the face. It’s framed by a custom white mantle.
